Your question is in two parts, so I'll address them one at a time.

Applied science is when information is used from one or more sciences to solve a problem. There are applied linguistics (my field) agriculture, education, forestry, architecture. The list goes on and on. Generally the way information is gathered is through empirical research. That means going out and collecting data, analyzing the data and reporting results.

This brings us you the second part of your question: how do libraries help and to what degree? Firstly, the information gathered from libraries is very important and generally contribute an average of about 20% of any scientific journal article in the way of the review of the literature section included in all articles.

The importance of the information gathered from libraries helps the scientist learn what other researchers have already done. It helps to avoid unnecessary repetition to only come to the same conclusions, or it helps researchers duplicate previous studies to see if there is any difference in the results which could threaten or further validate previous research.

I may be rambling, but I hope that I gave you some idea of what you were requesting. Good luck with whatever it is you are doing.
