I'm debating moving into these. The apartments and apartment community are beautiful. I was very impressed with the apartments themselves and the amenities available on campus. I'm only concerned about the surrounding area. How is the crime in this area of Richmond (close to San Pablo)? (I don't need to live like the kids in the movie Coach Carter) And the Tara Hills Elementary School? How is that?

In comparison, I'm moving from Gilroy, CA, which is dirty, smelly (garlic and onions), and has terrible elementary schools.

Any advice or thoughts are appreciated.

Richmond is a pretty rough place although I hear there are pockets of safe areas. Even if Hilltop is relatively safe ending children from a more innocent area to public schools there would probably be disastrous.

You might want to just go up there and see the neighborhood/school for yourself. But my gut reaction would be try el cerrito or albany.

Frmo my experience living in Richmond and working with the school aged children there, I would say there are better places to live.

It's true all cities have a certain amount of crime but when it comes to your kids education, wouldn't you want to see them get the best?

If you must move that way, try Albany or Kensington. Both are on the border of Berkeley.
