Me, I think it's Man's indomitable will. It drives us to invent airplanes, cure polio, free India, walk on the moon. It's also responsible for the most horrific crimes mankind has ever committed on itself, but the accomplishments outweigh the horrors.

I was watching a NOVA special about a family in Turkey that walks on all fours. They tried to get the kids to walk on 2 legs, but they had almost no hope that the oldest would ever learn to walk. But at the end of the program there he was, this mentally handicapped person who'd walked on all fours all his life, and he was walking. Slow, unsteady - he fell once, but pushed himself back up.

The power of determination - I think that's Man's greatest virtue.

There are so many that come to mind..this question makes me feel like such an idealist, but I would have to say that the the highest virtue is hope. Which is what makes people keep trying to be a little bit better than they were last year even when everything around us suggests the world is a big scary place that's only getting worse.
