I'm not sure exactly what makes a person a celebrity. Are all famous people celebrities? I don't usually think of politicians, or business people, or behind-the-scenes people (like move directors as opposed to movie stars) as celebrities.

There should be some acid test. How about this: If people would be willing to request your autographed photograph, then you are some sort of celebrity.

So how do you get to be this sort of person?

Some of it you can't do much about: it helps to be born rich or talented or both. Being good looking, by some standard, seems to be a necessity. You can look odd (think Steve Buscemi), but you can't look utterly plain.

Then you have to get lots of publicity for something, good, bad or otherwise (such as weird). A breakthrough role helps an actor. I suppose some criminals have been celebrities of sorts, at least for a while. OJ Simpson is a pretty notorious celebrity.

One odd thing about celebrity is that if you are genuinely talented, being a celebrity seems to be the price you pay for making use of that talent. But many stars are uncomfortable with or dismissive of their celebrity status. In fact, many will go great lengths to escape the pain of being a celebrity.

On the other hand, many people who have little or no talent, but a lot of money, fame, and good looks, seem to crave celebrity status at almost any price to their dignity or reputation. (Think Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.) Personally, I love incredibly beautiful and talented stars (think Natalie Portman) about whom we hear nothing until their next movie comes out.

I would say your question is maybe an unhealthy one. Concentrate on developing genuine talent. If things come to fruition, you may have to pay the price of celebrity status someday. But if you strive to be a celebrity for its own sake, you may find out that Pauly Shore is your new best friend.
