You become pregnant if the sperm meet the egg whilst it is in the fallopian tube. The egg normally drops about 14 days before your period begins so if you have regular 28 day periods that will be about 2 weeks after your period has started. Sperm can live for 2 or 3 days in the womb so the worst (or best) time to have sex is just before the middle of your cycle. However, the human body is a contrary thing. You may ovulate during or just after your period, if you did, you could get pregnant then, and unfortunately there is no way to tell until it happens. If you don't want to get pregnant, avoid having unprotected sex.

I got this off a medical website. Hope it helps!

"The debate on whether or not a woman can get pregnant during her period has been going on for decades now. Just like every woman is different, so are her hormonal balances and hence her menstrual cycle. Though there are generalities on which some ground basics of menstruation and pregnancy can be formed, but eventually it all boils down to individual physiology. So, yes, you can get pregnant during your periods.

There is a definite chance that any woman can get pregnant during her periods. Though the chances of pregnancy during periods are usually low during periods, they exist for all women. During periods, the chances of pregnancy are comparatively lower at the onset of a woman's period and increase just after her periods. The truth is that there is no predictable time during the month when the risk of pregnancy can be said to be absent. Lets understand how and when this can happen."

No, pregnancy may take place during release of ova from ovary which which is released between 14 to16 day from the first day of monthly period. Further sperm survives for 24 hours and ova survives for 48 hours. Thus sex between 13 -18 is not safe. Further your may give 24 grace before and after ova is released. so for safety point of view you should use condom between 12 -19 day from first day of monthly period.
