Often nothing. Above answer is correct there. Mix iron filings and sulpher together - the iron is still iron and acts like iron, the sulpher is still sulpher and acts like sulpher.

However, one substance can act as a catalyst if a chemical recction is to take place.

It depends on the chemicals you combine. Some dissolve, such as salt, and others do not.
