Does anyone know if they are still executing people in India?

I read and saw that certain tribes in India were still executing people by way of their trained Elephants, that stomp them to death.
Are they still doing this? And who and why did they use this animal?
Was it because of a religious thing as not to kill someone yourself.
In other words were they hiding behind the Elephant? ( What a good place to hide behind)?
