A hoax is an attempt to trick an audience into believing that something false is real. Unlike a fraud or con (which usually has an audience of one or a few), which are made for illicit financial or material gain, a hoax is often perpetrated as a practical joke, to cause embarrassment, or to provoke social change by making people aware of something.

A hoax is a method used to deceive people to believe that the provided information is true. The hoax is presented in a way that it creates shock and disbelief to people who are receiving the information.

Example:
Person1: Did you hear that Steve Urkel died?
Person2: No way! He did? How did he die? I can't believe it!
Person1: I don't know but I heard he died though.

In this hoax, he did not really die. He's still alive and people don't know he works for the NBA as a writer. All hoaxes are used for is to create shock and disbelief to misinform the public.

a fake happening. i guess a prime example is a bomb hoax. people call up somewhere and say there is a bomb. then everyone evacuates. they find there is no bomb. it is a hoax because the object actually isn't there.
