In this sentence does the first use of the word "genocide", the one in parenthesis, seem redundant? Should I take it or should I leave it?

Hotel Rwanda in my opinion, backed up by the actual historical records says that George romanticized an unpleasant time in history (the genocide) as he reworked the historical material to heavily tone down the intensity of the genocide violence.

Make the second usage of genocide "genocidal" instead. Genocide is a noun and since you are using this word as an adjective it would be better to use the adjective form. Also, have someone check you punctuation.

You're right. The first genocide is redundant in the given sentence

I agree with both the first two answers. And the second use of the word has to be an adjective not a noun.

I would say so. I 'd suggest the word 'violence' is too. I'd also chuck in a comma after the word 'records'.
