I would use a router with carbon tipped blades. This way when you get hacked you can cut them back and keep them on edge. I am sure the hacker will get the point after a while. Good Luck

it's not required, and not a perfect solution because you can still get infected by a hacker via email or some other source, but it does provide you some protection as a "firewall". a hardware firewall, to be exact.
instead, or in addition to a router, you can run software firewalls. it just depends on what level of security makes you comfortable.
routers are pretty inexpensive, and not to hard to get the hang of. go for it. ;-) besides, if you need help configuring it you know where to go to get answers!

ABSOLUTLY DO NOT SURF THE NET WITHOUT A ROUTERFOR PROTECTION!
a software firewall such as zone alarm can be made to work but it is so much easier to take the router out of the box hook it up and go. i have neve been hacked whe nbehind a router. Got it a few times surfing "naked"

Yes, it will help a lot. Make sure that your router actually mentions having Firewall protection because I saw a few a while back that didn't provide that but tried to sell you software to run on your desktop from major vendor (think Symantec). You can get them for pretty darn cheap online from sites like pricegrabber.com or for random good deal check out www.bensbargains.net or www.techbargains.com.

No, you need router only if you use more than one computer to get to the Internet.

There should not be any configuration mandatory - be particular which you verify to be particular that her laptop has the drivers for her ethernet port put in and enabled and that her laptop is attempting to hook up with the interior of sight section community (LAN) and not a instantaneous community (you may verify this in Vista via clicking on initiate...community, then because of the fact that's chosen). sturdy success!

Do you need one no, but you could use one for better protection. You can also go to www.download.com and look for free firewall programs. I use one I found there that is called Ashampoo and it works pretty good.
