The most common ingredient in over the counter sleep aids is Diphenhydramine or Benadryl - yep for colds and allergies. It is non addictive, usually knocks you out, and you wont have one of those nights with a dry booger halfway up your nasal cavity that won't come out no matter how hard you blow and tickles your nose incessantly with every breath in and out you take.

There are several kinds of antihistamines and any of them has a chance of making you drowsy......some more than others though. The antihistamine in Claritin is the least likely to make you drowsy.........the one in Benadryl is most likely to get you to sleep. The antihistamine in Benadryl does not make me drowsy at all but the one used in Nyquil knocks me out so I just looked for the same antihistamine in the over the counter sleep aids that had that same antihistamine. Read the labels and use what works for you. Make sure you don't take a decongestant with it because that will keep you awake, raise your heart beat and your blood pressure.
