The retail license is seperate from a tax number which you can obtain from the IRS. A retail lic. is available from your state office and can be received when you receive your business license. Look online under state govenrments website.

IRS.gov will be able to help you they have articles on who needs a tax number and will also be able to download the forms you need to apply. I wish you all the best!

No, not from the IRS. Retail licenses, or reseller permits, are issued by the state government. You fill out a form, let them know when you plan to start your business, what type of business it will be (what type of goods or services you will be selling) and then they will send you a reseller permit. This will allow you to purchase items for resale (i.e. inventory) and not pay sales tax on it. When you sell the item, you need to collect sales tax from the purchaser and then you need to begin filing quarterly sales tax returns with the state.

Check with your state's board of Equalization. They handle all of that. and if for some reason they can't help you, they will know who to talk to.
