so when kids get bad grades in school is it really because they are dumb or its their own choice. i mean is it possible for everyone (leaving out the mentally challenged and similar people in this question) to be smart? there is more than one way to teach somebody something so everyone has an opportunity to learn. so my thesis is "are people doing bad in school because of their brains or because of their choices?"

Literally people don't know any better and refuse to learn, the most obvious symptom is when they already know it all and are closed to further learning. People make the mistake of telling me they think I'm smart, but I know there is a world of stuff out there I don't know, but desire to, and at least study and question everything if I can and not accept "because I told you so" as proof. We only use a tiny portion of our brain, and people can literally "rewire" it, for better or worse, with things like injuries, chemical/drug reactions, electrical shock, etc. or even strokes/bloodclots, so what is required is the DESIRE to learn. Brains are proven to deteorate when we cease to use them, so the secretary on top of everything at the office, goes home to her cats and ends up wandering the streets unable to recall where she lives, because her brain literally has started to shut down. People do bad in school because of many factors, they are distracted, poor nutrition, lack of sleep, peer pressures, boredom, discipline problems, family problems at home, hormone/emotiional issues, etc. but the basic desire, understanding the incentive to doing well, motivation, that is critical. If you have a dumb **** of a teacher that can't answer questions without her teacher's edition textbook under her beak, who has tenure and doesn't care as long as you don't fail the regents exam and make her look bad, you'll have poor incentive to even show up for class. That is why the teacher's union is the BIGGEST problem in the education picture, and paying them more money is rewarding them for depriving children of a decent education. (I have issues too :P )

I have seen some kids who are more focussed on being "popular" or good at sports or music.

I think a lot of it depends on your "focus". After all, all IQ tests measure what the kid knows which is directly related to his interest in studies.

If you are a person without any disability, it mostly about "choices" and "family and social factors". For example, if you saw your elder sibiling get pulled down for reading too much or spending more time with a single geeky friend than a bunch of friends, you'll probably learn to gravitate towards the "popular" kids or sports. Most of the kids behavior is learned behavior -- depending on rewards and punishments doled out.

I like the learning methodologies answer too. But there are more types than hands on and auditory. There's visual and a whole lot more. it would be ideal if we could get all the kids with same methodology in the same classroom and teach. That would be awesome!

But I am no expert; this is a layman putting up her views.

I do not think that it is all the fault of the learner.
Everyone learns different if you have 50% that learn by hands on and 50% that learn by auditory. And the teacher's technique is hands on, then the auditory will do badly.
I agree that there has to be an easier way so no one gets cheated of an education. I think this causes a snowball effect to ok, I'm not getting this so I give up (self esteem). Thus making it a choice to give up but with valid reasons, because no one would take the time to teach 1/2 and 1/2 or for that individual.
Auditory can catch up by reading on thier own. But the hands on need a little extra help. But that is my opinion!
Good question!
They need to downsize classrooms, and test auditory learning and hands on to shift them to the proper teachers and with alike classmates.

I an going to disagree with everyone here...some people are just dumb. All the teaching approaches in the world will not help them retain a lucid thought. All are not born equal. Some babies talk at 7 months and some at 3 years. I've had a lot of years on this earth and I can assure you there are individuals with no redeeming features what-so-ever. Its just lucky for them we have social security and they have nothing to offer at all.
HARSH BUT TRUE.

I don't think it's necessarily just the student. People have different methods of learning. If the teacher is only showing 1 or 2 methods, then the student may not retain the information if they don't know how to use the method that helps them learn.

Also with big classes students get ignored.

So I don't think it's always a choice. I think it's a matter of skill.

well no ones really born DUMB. even less privilaged children are intelegent and unique in their own ways

someone may not be good inmath but will have their own talents that expresses them.

some also learn quicker, faster and better than others and they stand out

but everyone is capable, even if it takes 10 times longer.

you have to have the inner strength to be willing to try and strive for your best

many just start not trying and they grow into it. if a child is willing to learn, they'll always try.

a child should never feel stupid or be shy to ask if they dont understnad something

if you dont have good study skills, there are ways to practice and learn. some are visual learners, others are readers, do-er's and even writing learners.

no one should be called stupid because everyone has some talent that they show and shine sometime in life. others may just throw it all away with desicions they make in life

Probably some are just dumb and some make poor choices. Maybe some are affected by one or more factors in their environments that make learning difficult. For example, poverty. When you have to worry about getting enough to eat, it's pretty hard to even care about studies.

Te illuminati is basically the authorities and politics. that's all about the hot international order and issues that are coming like RFID chips.
