Because the term "athletic trainer" is misleading and belies the true aspects of the ATC. It sounds more like we train the athletes rather than care for their injuries.

The question about whether the title should remain as is or change (perhaps to a title such as "athletic therapist" or "medical trainer") is hugely debatable among ATCs. Personally, I believe in educating the public about the difference and leaving the title as is. People who played sports are usually aware what an ATC does, and everyone else who assumes it is the same, I simply inform them of the difference.
