I have just purchased a RXT flip top helmet and was wondering what the actual safety speed at which they cracked up was,i have heard that the AS-1698 is only 35kmp/h,which is pretty scary,as no-one i know drives or rides at 35 !!!!!!!

In the US, we have DOT Safety standards. The helmets are designed to withstand an impact of 12 miles per hour.....SNELL (Euro standards) are better, at 35kmp.

Youre thinking "Who the heck rides at 12mph?" Well, thats not the point. The point is, when standing up straight and "tipping over" to one side, the head of a 6' tall man will accelerate to 12mph before impacting the ground... This is what the helmet is designed to protect you from - falling off the motorcycle and slamming your head into the pavement. the rest of a crash is usually sliding down the road - which the helmet further protects you from.

They are not designed with the intension of riding straight into a concrete wall. If designed to wirthstand that much impact, your head would explode inside the thing.

It isn't calculated that way at all. You could come off at 150mph and not do much damage, but if some clown hits you with maximum effort using a ball-pein hammer you'd better watch out. You can buy a copy of the standard at www.saiglobal.com.au if you wish to.
