Let's clarify something. Are you talking about just using the Itunes software to put music on the Ipod, or are you taking about purhased music from the Itunes music store?

The Itunes software will allow you to rip music from a regular CD into mp3 format which you can then transfer into your Ipod.

You can also use the Itunes software to purchase music from the Itunes music store. This music is in the m4p format (I think that's what it's called), which is essentially the same thing as an mp3 however it has licensing information embedded in it that says that you own that song. I don't know if these will play on other Ipods (I've never tried), but I do know that you can not play these files on other computers unless you go through the process of authorizing that computer. Itunes limits the number of computers that you can authorize to 5, and as far as I know, there is no way to unauthorize that computer once its's been done. This makes me think that you would not be able to play purchased music files on other Ipods.

There is also other software that will manage your Ipod for you, such as Real Player and Winamp. As far as I know though, you canot rip CDs with real player (I could be wrong here), and if you want the version of Winamp that will rip CDs, you have to buy the $20 pro version instead of the basic free one. Itunes is free, and not only will it rip CD's, but it will also burn CD's. Plus, it's ridiculously easy to use. And if you have not done so already, you can download Itunes from www.apple.com/itunes and check it out before you buy the Ipod. I actually was using Itunes as a music player for my computer before I ever got an Ipod, just because I liked it better than Winamp, Real Player, Windows Media Player, etc...

From what I've seen of them, there's a way to view the ipod as a drive and then you can put stuff on it. I think that winamp has a plugin for putting music on it too.

And if you want to put an ITUNES song on more than one IPOD you're going to have to remove the DRM (Digital Rights Management) from the audio file. There are programs for this on the net... If you google ITUNES DRM you should be able to find some sort of solution.

You can get music from other sources (Cd's, limewire etc) but you have to import it into iTunes, because you need iTunes in order to sync the music to your iPod. (And sometimes this won't work - say you download songs from walmart.com or Yahoo!music; these songs will be in a protected format so they won't work in iTunes, and therefore won't work on your iPod. It's complicated, I know.)
And no, you can only put your music onto one iPod.
