To understand connotation you would be best to understand the difference between that and denotation. denote is the descriptive and open meaning of something. It could be a word but connotation means as others have stated there is not neccessarily an open meaning but overtones that could be emotive or express some other meaning, such as positvie and negative connotations, denotation in a report for instance could be excellent but the connotation could be bad. eg, the report on teenage smoking was excellent in it's description of the facts, however, the overall connotation of the report was negative - that teenage smoking is increasing. Hope this helps.

Connotation is the meaning of a word, but with emotion mixed into it. For example, a dictionary might say that a mother is a woman who has given birth, but its connotation includes something else--a feeling of warmth and love.

I hope this helps.

connotation is the meaning we associate with a word, but not necessarily the dictionary's definition of the word.

For example, molest. We've used molestation so often in such a manner that in most people minds it means to act in a sexually offensive way towards someone, usually a child.

However, the dictionary meaning (denotation) of molestation, is simply to bother someone. So next time that guy that sits behind you pokes you with his pencil, you could technically scream "Stop molesting me" and be technically right. However, since connotation tends to be stronger in people's minds than denotation, you would still get weird looks.

Good luck!

connotation - the hidden, or underlying meaning or implyed meaning by a word.

example of connotation: the connotation of 'jesus being a rock' - would mean 'jesus is the foundation of our life" whereas a denonation would suggest that jesus literally is a rock!

hope this helped! :)

Connotation is the emotion or feeling associated with a word.

Ex:
Plump-- cute, chubby
Obese-- huge, unhealthy, not good

See the difference?

Other examples: chatty vs. glib, amusing vs. droll, etc
