A few reasons: They think they can get away with it, they are scared of the reaction of the other person, they want to feel smarter/more clever than everyone else, they don't want to get in trouble, they are ashamed of what they are lying about, they don't want to face reality, etc.

Unfortunately, there are people in this world that would rather climb a tree to lie to you when they could stand on the ground & tell the truth.
It is just the way some are and whether it is from environment or just because it is easy, there isn't any way to tell. Frustrating though it may be, if it is a friend, you sometimes just look over them, but eventually, it really does come to a point when you have to distance yourself from them.
I don't know if they want to lie. Some are simply compulsive liars and can't help themselves. And these need psychiatric help.

Everybody lies. It may only be “white” lies, but everyone tells lies or “omits the truth” sometimes
children begin to use lying to get out of trouble or get something they want.
White lies, those concocted to protect someone’s feelings, are not a big deal at all. The person, however, who seems to feel compelled to lie about both the small and large stuff has a problem.
liars often find themselves perpetrating more untruths to cover themselves.
for example we hold different people to different standards when it comes to telling the truth. We expect, for example, less honesty from politicians than from scientists
Why do we dislike liars so much? It’s a matter of trust.

what is your question again? why do people lie or why do people "want" to lie?
I guess no one "want" to lie, if they have a better solution, Usually people lie to make other feel better. of course there could be bad ones, such as setup or back-stabbing. If the purpose is like this, you must look into the reasons and goals they want to achieve, so to get "why do people want to lie".

There could be many reasons. But basically they do it because they lack courage to tell the truth

To protect the young (we sugarcoat the truth of harmful incidents), or to guard our own insecurity.
