Hi Nicole. I gave lestm a vote for the best answer. The principle you need to understand is this: when adding or subtracting fractions, you need the fractions to have the same denominator. So the smallest common denominator for 6 (5/6) and 5 (3/5) is 30. So, 5/6 equals 25/30 when you multiply the numerator and the denominator by 5. 3/5 equals 18/30 when you multiply the numerator and denominator by 6.

Hope this helps you understand the concept. When you understand, you can add or subtract any group of fractions.

5/6 = 25/30
3/5 = 18/30
therefore 5/6 - 3/5 = 25/30 - 18/30 which = 7/30
