I believe there is police corruption because being a police officer is a very dark job. How would you act if this was your one month job discription. You were around people who cussed you out daily. Witness children, mothers, elderly being abused. Child molestaion, gang members wanting to kill you, People wanting you to kill them. Drug addicts flipping out on you. Witnessing young girls sell themselves for drugs and money. People constantly trying to rip off the hard working people. People constantly lieing to you. drunk drivers, Drive by shooting, Car jacking, sucides. and fist fights at least once or twice a month and mabey being shot at once or twice a year. Do I need to go on. I had to leave the Police force because one can only take so much after 20 years. And then have to go home and hear the wife nag why you can't communicate and why you cant open up. There is no excuse for police corruption, but give us a break. There are always a few bad apples. and now there would not be less police corruption if we had better pensions. Things will only get worse sad to say.

Point of view from a Toronto Police Officer
Yes, but not for the reasons you think. Police officers (especially in the USA, sorry but we get OK pay here) don't always get great pay for what they're expected to do. So good people who would have become police officers instead pursue other careers. (not that I'm saying good people don't become cops...I think most cops are good people).
Now we have another group of people. Those who ARE drawn to the ... darker "benefits" of the job. The power, the oportunities to drive fast and get into fights, etc. These people will take any benefit that comes their way.
Basically what I'm saying is you pay better, you get more people applying for the job for the right reasons because now they can aford to be idealistic. I know many coppers who worked for years to put away enough money in order to pursue their dreams of being a cop ... because a cop salary alone wouldn't be enough to raise a family.
Did you know in some cities cops qualified for Food Stamps??? Think about that.

No. Corruption is a vicious circle.Just like others, Police are also in it. Even some one wants to come out, it will be difficult. Only new Laws with stringent punishment or public fury can stop Corruption. Cleaning up of this malady should start from the top. We need strong Leader who can take Strong action to cleanup this from the top.

maybe,
but you's still have all those A holes who love to power trip. you know the fat kids nobody liked in high school. the guys who's daddys wouldn't love them. the little jerk offs who yoused to burn cats trapped in garbage bags behind the wal-mart. those people love haveing power, and the gun attached to there hip.
if they hand rigorous mental exams maybe that would bring the coruption down.
police can't recruit as it is, and i'd say raise teacher salary before you throw cops a better donut

Of course. Those men and women don't get paid nearly enough to be guarding our lives and well being.
