I have a a BMW 325i, and i was wondering if it is true that your car accelerates faster when using the steptronic (manual) shifting, rather than the automatic?

Yes it is true. Here is why
An automatic is set by the rpm and will shift where it is set( insided the trans)
With a manual you control when it shifts so you can build up the RPMs befor you shift. Thus more power and faster to get to that top speed.
Since it is not controlled by the trans but by you it will build up more power.

A automatic will shift sooner and give you better gas milage

Yes. As u see, that all race car drivers use manual shifts as u can increase the speed of ur car more faster. Although u can drive fast with auto as the latest cars respond to how much u floor the pedal, manual stil has the edge of getting extra juice of the car.
As far as mileage is conerned, automatics give less mileage than manual ( given that u drive ur manual more smoother with not high revs). An auto doesnt have to shift sooner, it depends how much acceleration u give. The more u press, the more longer it will shift and u can achieve max on the RPM. Its all in the programming.
