How did the word 'f.ag' or 'fag.got' come to be known as a term of abuse to describe gay men???

I heard that in the days of burning witches at the stake, they would through f-aggots (bundles of sticks) on the fire to keep the fire hot enough to burn the "witch" completely. When they ran out of f-aggots, then they grabbed the homosexual and used them instead of the *******. The name grew out of associating homosexuals with those bundle of sticks.

Coined in the Victorian era, this term comes from the practice in British Public Schools of making the students do menial tasks such as gathering the sticks to make *****ts, which were used instead of logs. These menial tasks became known as "*****t-work", and it was the lowest of the low socially that typically were made to do these tasks.
