You will need several things...
First, you need a good Firewall. There are several good ones you can use like McAfee, Norton, etc.. I personally prefer ZoneAlarm Pro (I have a link to it on my personal website listed below)...
You might also want a good virus scanner to check the current condition of your computer.. there are many to choose from AVG is free and many people use it.. Norton, McAfee make one too and ZoneAlarm Pro has it built in too...
Finally, you will need a good Spyware scanner.. again, the same people produce this as do the other computer security products and you can find free ones available for download (some are just trial software)...,
I personally use ZoneAlarm Pro because it has all three together and you can set it up to automaticall scan for viruses or spyware on any day or time that you wish (the others probably offer this too but I'm not as familiar with them) and the firewall is able to be set up so that it protects you as much or as little as you want (with a special setting for games or other software that change a lot too)...
I have the link for ZoneAlarm on my webpage along with links for some free graphics programs that I like.. check it out.. good luck!

First you will need an anti-virus program, anti-spyware, anti-malware(Windows Defender) and make sure all of them are up-to-date. You can use Windows XP firewall to save on disk space and Windows Security Center to monitor these programs but I strongly recommend the purchase of a hardware firewall to ease your tension with computer viruses, trojans, etc. When I say hardware firewall, I mean a router, that's all, most routers have hardware components that prevent intrusion on your computer. And to top it all off, most computer viruses are from user error. Visiting questionable web sites and downloading without knowing the vendor or other user of the software can cause many problems.

Because some people, who don't have a life, get their jollies by stealing your identity or messing up your computer to the point where commands will not work. Believe me, you don't want a computer virus. I brought one home from work years ago and ended up taking my PC in for a total, clean reinstall of everything.
