For some people it's all about getting all of the attention that they can. Most of those people are shy and introverted and screaming for help. We should first seek to understand. What do you think?

I think the whole earring as a sign of being gay was back in the 80s & early 90s when being out wasn't as socially acceptable. Since being gay isn't such a big deal anymore, the pierced ear signal isn't really relevant anymore. So I think you're probably OK getting whatever ear you want done pierced. Most gay guys can tell if you're straight or not, and an earring isn't going to be the clue they're looking for.

Gauging or stretching is a centuries old process once done by tribal and religious groups to show strength, dedication and patience for various reasons. In those times, the size of your ear lobes, bottom lip, septum or the length of your neck showed certain status and respect. You can find lots of information about it online, its a rather interesting process and its something I have read about and found a love and respect for. Now a days, its a popular style and trend, some people do jump into this serious body modification blindly. I however, did not do that. I read about the culture and process beforehand and accounted for all outcomes and the future.
The ears are not always pierced with large holes, though some piercers have the skills to scalpel ears, most people use tapers to gradually stretch their lobes to their desired size. Generally, any gauge smaller than 2g is guaranteed to go back down to approximately 16 g which would allow someone to wear post like earrings. Any gauge larger than 2g will not shrink down small enough and may require surgery to 'fix' the lobe. If care if not taken while stretching, you can tear your lobe which is unfortunate.
Yes, my ears are gauged and I am completely okay with the fact that they will not shrink up. I am also okay with the fact that you and 80%+ of everyone else does not like them. However, my body modifications were done because I like them and I have a passion in them. They are not there for your happiness and I would never do things to suit your ideas of beautiful or anyone else's for that matter. You may not like it and you would probably judge me greatly because of it, but please, have the good will not to call it mutilation.

I would say when your talking about people in America it is just a style that has become popular. People that are mostly within the rock music culture get it because it's considered cool to have as many weird or crazy piercing/tattoos as you can. I have my ears stretched a bit from when I was 16 and now 3 years later when I look at why I got it, it's exactly why I listed above. I would say for most people there is no deeper meaning behind it.

It seems to be derived from tribal culture; Some tribes place large plates in their lips and earlobes, stretching them over time. In their culture this is attractive. I can't say the same is true here, but whatever floats yer boat, I guess....

Its probaly for the same reason as implanting steel shapes under your skin to make "funky" shapes. People are just weird.
