In physiological psych, they taught us that dreams serve three functions
A) garbage dumping (we cant save every memory)
b) memory consolidation (in the process of sorting out our memories, we save the ones to keep - which is why not getting sleep will mess with your ability to study)
and
c) your subconscius trying to tell you something that you are not "getting"

Sleep research is the field of psychology and neurology.
They do all kinds of it, but usually not on that phase of sleep.
Most medical centers have sleep research centers
Go to google, type in the largest city near you and "sleep research center" - then go through those hits, it will give you an idea of what they study....

Dreams certainly do have meanings, and most of the images yu see in dreams have a symbolic meaning. There are 3 types of dreams: representational; wherein the dream symbols represent another person, place or concept; in the moment, where you are just reliving something that you remember; or portentous dreams, that have some truth in what is going to happen in the future.

Get you a good dream interpretation book, and look up the symbols. Most symbols, however, you will know instinctively, if you have the gift of dream interpretation. I have never used a book for this, it just comes to me what they mean.

Look up Jung. He was a psychologist that wrote a lot about dreams and the collective unconscious. Yes, according to theory, dreams do have meaning...particularly to your experience. But we all have a collective unconscious with archetypes..or symbols that affect our everyday existance. If you are interested in this...there is a career in research psychology...or you could go into the occult and learn about shamanism. Many learned shamans use dreams to affect and interpret their reality.

You must remember that every part of the body has to be able to rid itself of un-wanted and un-usable material. The brain is jammed full of information that it cannot use and from time to time it has to purge itself of worthless information.. dreams are a way for the brain to throw out the trash.. most of them are jumbled and disjointed and of no value to you.. don't get caught up into trying to figure them out..most are just trash.. the ones that have a special meaning are the ones to pay attention to.. they may be more of a vision of truth from exact information that the brain has stored.. study those.. and find the underlying cause..

THERE ARE BOOKS AT THE LIBRARY THAT IS CALLED THE INTERPRETATIONS OF DREAMS AND IT IS SO OFF THE WALL THAT ONCE IT STARTS IT HAS LITTLE OR NO INFORMATION AND HAS ALL KINDS OF B. S. TO FURTHER MORE, THAT I COULDN'T MAKE HEADS OR TAILS OF ONE OF THOSE BOOKS BUT IF U FIND ONE READ FOR WHAT U ARE LOOKING FOR AND THEN THROW IT BACK CAUSE MOST OF IT IS SO INDIVIDUAL CONSTRUED THAT IT HAS NO DEPTH OR WIDTH IT JUST RAMBLES AND MAKES LITTLE SENSE WHEN ANSWERS ARE NEEDED
