Toyota - no argument there. And the more basic the better - Corolla is the epitome of reliabilty. Boring as hell, but it will always get you there! And by proxy, the same goes for the luxury Toyotas, aka Lexus. A Corolla is quite capable of 200,000 miles without major expense, if serviced every 5-8000miles. Ive seen one thats done 600,000 (1,000,000km!!) Nissan would be a close second, again the more basic the better. Nissan do seem to be exceptionally tough if you are hard on your car. Honda are very good, but there gearboxes give up earlier than other japanese makes. Hyundai are a korean company that are proving to be very reliable too.
As for the worst reliability? It would probably be Italian - Fiat (Fix It Again Toni!) or Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, etc. I was horrified at the lack of build quality in US made cars during my visits there - the number of stories I heard of cars less than 1yr old requiring major work done - gearbox replacements, computer malfunctions, etc. My 1yr old Ford Excursion was a nightmare pig. That would NEVER happen with a Toyota!

To my knowledge Benz (older models) have a very high resistance to break down. They will last very long. The problem is that Toyota owners do feel problems in their cars more obvious than Mercedes Benz owners because a Benz is tougher and more powerful. That is why people drive in with their corollas to the repair shop and not get it towed in after a complete breakdown.
The less the electronics the car have the more reliable, that is why I told you to by an old used car. Even with the slightest knowledge you can repair it and get it back on road.

That is very subjective because if you are talking about an overall car the doesn't break down as in the engine, electrical and interior parts. I think Toyota would be pretty close to the best. There are plenty that are so bad it is hard to qualify a singular company.

Toyota is the best by a long shot, I drive a '97 Avalon with no trouble and my dad drives (and will not part with until it breaks down completely) His 5 speed '95 Corolla wagon. we drove a '92 Previa to 180,000 miles with only a few problems (none serious) over it's entire lifespan.
the worst cars are probably low end GM or Kias.

any foreign made car. I have had two cars. My '91 honda accord is amazing. It just doesn't look amazing. It has dents and scratches all over the place. It has no hubcaps. But it still works great, I just need to put some money into it and make it look nice. The other car is a 92 toyota camry. It is fast, for a camry, and has never broken down on me.

i own a repair shop, and Toyota corolla has the best reputation for lasting the longest and not breaking down on you ,i have never had to repair one that actually broke down, and was towed in,,they always drive them in,,so a Toyota ,,or a Nissan would be a good choice,,Nissan by the way is as good ,if not better that a Toyota, the sentra in the Nissan is a real good car,,good luck,i hope this help,s.

In the U.S., Rolls Royce probably has the best rep while Kia has the worst.

Most reliable?
-Honda and Toyota are pretty much neck and neck...
Least reliable?
Kia and Hyundai used to be, but they are much better now.
- Ford and Chrysler are pretty much side-by-side,
with GM close-by.
