Any Flawless gemstone can fetch a good price, based on rough carat. But once it is cut intricately and polished then the asking price goes sky high. Gemstone like diamonds, rubies, sapphire, emeralds. But then again there is another stone that have something in it like amber. Another one is a sedimentary rock with an unknown unique animal thats 3+ millions years old fossilized in it. That can fetch a high price too to a specimen collector.

Currently Diamonds. Because the Diamond Cartell, located in the Netherlands (like "deBeers")controls the elocation of Diamonds on the world market. They have billions of Dollars worth of Diamonds locked up and release only so many to control the price on the world market. I they would throw all of them at once on the market, the price would plummet and your Grandmother's garnets would be worth more.
Diamonds are a commodity.
