Was i ripped off or is it like this to everyone? BTW, this is the newly 'remastered' nano one

Every MP3 player is like this. Your Nano has 2GB of flash memory, but that's total. That operating system that you use that catalogues, plays, sorts, lets you play games, store calendar entries etc,,. that all takes up room and that is where your 22MB is going.

I have the new nano too. Mine also displays only 1.78 gb. How ever, if you have only music and no photos on it it will hold 500 songs. The amount of songs it hold is based on the average run time of a song(4 mins).

No it IS like that for everyone. The way gigabytes are counted on the box is different from the way memory is counted once its in the computer. Plus you have to factor in the software that controls the iPods functioning. That takes up memory.

Some of the 2 GB is used for the software that makes the iPod run. I have the same problem with my iPod.

There are files that help to play the songs and stuff. That takes up memory.
