There is no real answer to this question but what I have learned of what love is to me and that is the word LOVE itself holds the answer.......

(L)isten: and validate them by hearing and empathizing.
(O)verlook: their minor character flaws as they will overlook yours.
(V)alue: who they are and what they mean to you.
(E)xpress: how you love them not just with words but with actions.

All of the above. In ancient times, it was, of course, a way to carry on blood lines. Now, I believe, we have evolved enough to recognize that fine dance between lust and physical pleasure and love and companionship.

Don't get me wrong. There are some very base people out there who can't make that distinction, but thankfully they are few and far between.

To me, Love is such an elusive concept. But my father in law put it best to me once years ago: Love is when you would, without hesitation, die for someone. In Islam, there is a saying that is something like "mashallah" and when I asked, he said it meant "I would die for you." and he explained it to me.

Love is also knowing all the foibles and weirdness in someone, and thinking they are just about perfect, anyway.

I hope you find it --there are a lot of people still looking!

Chemicals in the brain. National Geographic actually did an article about the chemicals when someone is in "love" and found that EEG scans of people in love and those with severe mental illness showed similar and disturbing patterns. Basically, we lose all rationality and logical thought when our endorphins kick in.

I personally think that love is a big lie that we have forced ourselves to believe in so that we can continue to procreate.

The philosopher Haddaway has toyed with this issue since 1993. He has asked the question "What is Love?" a number of times. After examining his thoughts on the subject, he does not have a conclusive solution, but begs his significant other to "Baby, don't hurt me, don't hurt me no more."
