Here are a couple of links to get you started with your essay. If you need more information, google "expository essays." Pick a topic that is important to you. You can do it! Good luck.

Use a formula that journalists use to write stories in expository style: It's called PREP
P = point, R = reason, E = example, and P = point (again). Here's how it works.

First you state your point (P). Then, you give a reason (R) for your point. Then, you give an example of your point (E). Finally, you finish off by restating your point in a slightly different way.

To make a good essay, you have to dress this up a bit, but PREP is your outline for organizing your thoughts.

Example (very simple): "I've found that there are many things that influence my life, but there are a few that really affect me at this point in my life more than others. (This is sort of the large "P" - and you are going to want to restate it when you end your essay). One very important part of my life right now is getting good grades (P). I need to get good grades in order to get into the college that I want to go to and to pursue a course of study that really interestes me (R). Because I have a great interest in Physics, I need to get good grades in Math and Science (E). Studying for the best grades I can get is a primary focus for me and has a great influence on how I spend my time. (P)

Another important factor in my life is....(P)" ....and so on

Note that you need a "P" for your entire essay, one that encompasses all that you are going to say. You make that statement in your "intro" if you wish, and then restate that same point at the end. Within each of your paragraphs, you use the same formula - more or less - over and over again. The "P" at the beginning and the restatement of the "P" at the end gives a sense of order to your essay and leads the reader to believe that you know what you want to say, that you believe what you have said, and that you know how to say it.

I've taught the formula for years and helped hundreds of HS students to get As on this kind of assignment. It works for just about everything, and will even help you in college. If I had known about this when I was a college freshman, I wouldn't have gotten a "C" in English (I knew what to write, I just didn't know how to write it).

Good luck. (By the way, spelling counts. Make sure you run your essay through a spell check and make sure that you have used all of your words correctly. Have someone proof it before you turn it in.)
