The general reason I've been able to understand is Osama was training forces to be a sort of "seal" or "ranger" force for Islam and when Saddam invaded Kuwait Osama expected to mobilize his troops and go in and liberate, but instead Saudi Arabia struck a deal with the US to go in instead. That miffed Osama.
He made one of his first attacks there against a US Navy ship. A boat pulled a long side and a suicide bomb went off blowing a hole in the Navy ship.
After that Osama finaced people to blow up the undeground supports at the World Trade Center, which happened, but didn't do any significant damage.
I don't know, he seems to fance himself a modern day Muhammad.

Osama bin Laden hopes to bring back an Islamic Caliphate over the holy sites in the middle east, which are located in Saudi Arabia mostly. His attempt at overthrowing the Saud royal family in order to do this caused them to arrest him and throw him out of Saudi Arabia. He perceived his failure at overthrow to be thwarted by American money that the Saudi government earns from oil sales..
This is why al Qaida attacked the US.
He drummed up hatred toward America by causing great unrest in Saudi Arabia due to the US military base that we kept there since the first gulf war. As a favor to the Sauds, George Bush removed that base and went looking for another foothold in a middle eastern oil country with a weak and unpopular leader...

The extremist want world domination basially. The first thing they want t do is run outside influence i.e. US) out of the region. The 9/11 attacks were done to crash our economy and most of the attacks they do is to hurt our economy. They believe once we are out of the region they can topple the regiems of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and UAE (there is a reason governments over there still ask us to be involved). Once that is done they can start expanding.

Your question implies that Osama operates based on logical thought, and not, as he does, a blind obedience to his gross interpretation of an article of faith.

Al Quada was waging Islamic Jihad against East Timur for separating from Indonesia, they have called for the destruction of India, and their prime objective is the re establishment of the Islamic Caliphate. Notice that when the bombings in Madrid took place, and Spain essentially surrendered to Bin Ladin, Bin Ladin's number two man didn't say they were terminating all operations in Spain, but were suspending them as a short term reward for Spain's compliance's with Bin Ladin. Why? Because Spain and Portugal both use to belong to the Muslim empire Bin Ladin wants back.

We are the infidels he hates. Every single American that is not a Muslim. His hatred for the People of America is the reason for the strike. Afraid there are lots of Bin Ladans out there. It is because we exist. Nothing more or less and we are not Muslim.

People will answer that the Terrorists just hate us and our way of life. I think it has more to do with our foreign policy, especially where Israel is concerned.
