They are both high maintenance bikes. If you race the top ends will need regular rebuilding at relatively short intervals (about 30 hrs)
The cranks only last roughly the same time, less if your prone to overreving engine
I think Honda have fixed the valve problems but the titanium valves dont last long. The rocker means heavier valve springs on Honda so valve/seat wear is still a problem

Pretty darned similar if you're looking at 05 and later.
The CRF has a slightly better reliability record, and a little less to go wrong in the head (one cam, four valves), but they both require maintenance.
I agree with the OP, don't count out the KTM - especially if you're not on the track for all your riding.

6 on one, half dozen on the other.
CRF a little bit more "rideable"
YZF a little bit more "zing"
Ride what your friends ride and get parts and crap from them
I personally went CRF and loved it. Gobs of power!!! The older YZF's were harder to start.
