So I just bought a dress shirt and was about to remove the collar stays and trash them and then it occurred to me that maybe they have a purpose. Anyway, should one always put them back in their shirts before wearing them? Is it safe to wash clothes with those little plastic collar stays inside? How about sending them to be laundered/pressed? Thanks.

The stays are there just to keep the collar crisp looking, its looks way better when you wear a tie. I've never taken them out. If you wash them, sometimes they will fall out in the washer or drier, but just slip em back in...not a big deal. They wont melt or anything.

How To Use Collar Stays

I take the collar stays out before sending to the dry cleaners. They can get lost. Replace them when your laundered shirts return home as they will keep your collar looking great...no turned up collar ends. I haven't had an easy time finding collar stays and have made them by cutting up a plastic milk jug. It works great. I always have them on hand.

The stays are there to keep your collar from curling and to anchor your tie. They should be removed for casual wear and laundering/pressing. Hope this helped.
