Ok, so i think i left some important information out. I'm getting good answers but not the right ones. So let me start over. The temperature gauge in my car keeps going to really high then back to normal then back to high then normal, all through the ride. And it drops when im pushing the gas but stopped at a light the temp goes up. And every time the engine temp goes up my heat in my car blowing from the vents gets cold. The "low coolant" light also comes on and off, however i have checked it every day and the resevior is at the full mark where it should be. My car is a 97 chevy lumina v6.

It seems that the coolant in the reservoir is not getting into the actual radiator. This could be caused by a bad radiator cap, or a problem with the small hose from the reservoir to the radiator. When the engine is cold, take off the rad cap, and check the level in there. Cold air out of the heater vent is a sign of low coolant level in the radiator.

I had this exact same issue. Changed the thermostat and had to fix my fans. Make sure your fans are working or fan if you only have one. Second thing it can be is the temperature unit sender on your enginge can be loose causing your fans not to work. because thats why when you press the gas the car gets cooler the air is being rushed into it and past your condenser as well letting ur ac work better. If your fans are working great then its either thermostat or yoru radiator is clogged up. IF you know how flush your radiator its quite easy you can email me or post a new question and ill tell you how to flush your radiator :D

ALSO if you have the 3.1L 3100 V6 which im sure you do I can tell you exactly where the thermostat is and the easy way to get it out cause I just had to replace mine its a LOT of work but easy work.

The t stat replacement and making sure the fans are working is the place to start. After that I look to the rad. Have it flow tested. If no flow that could cause a vac in the system hence no heat inside the car and the temp going up.Double check fluid level because it sure sounds like you have air in the system. Check it in the rad if possible as the expand tank can have fluid and the rad be low or empty. if this is the case check for the line from the rad to the tank being plugged

you probably have air trapped in the cooling system ther is a brass vent plug on the thermostat housing loosen the bleeder and fill radiator then close bleeder when coolant comes out with no bubbles.
