It's a torture device fitted with metal spikes that a person fits inside then when the doors of the device are closed metal spikes are pushed into the persons body, in most cases the spikes were designed to penetrate places that would inflict the most amount of pain but not quite kill.

My wife told me the answer to this.-- An Iron Maiden is a thing like an upright coffin that has spikes at all the pulse points. They were mainly used on ships. So when you had some dude that did some bad stuff, The captain put him in it and closed it up. They had this device right by the edge of the ship so that when the torture was done, all they had to do was open it up and dispose of the body into the ocean. My wife is a wickedly smart nut. It's so cool that she knows this. Her user name here at "answers" is queensassey.

An iron maiden is an iron cabinet allegedly built to torture or kill a person by piercing his body with sharp objects (such as knives, spikes, or nails), while the victim is forced to remain standing. The victim bleeds profusely and is weakened slowly, eventually dying because of blood loss, or perhaps asphyxiation.

The most famous, and probably the first, device was the iron maiden of Nuremberg.

An Iron Maiden was a torture instrument that was basically a huge metal casket lined with spikes on the inside. When it closed it would often impale the occupant in hundreds of places and leave them very close to death.

It was used by the church as a form of excursion. It looked somewhat like an egyptian tomb or a coffin. There was a drain on the bottom for the blood to flow out of. It was fitted for the woman(mostly not men) with spikes facing her every inch. If she remade still she would only get small pricks, but after spending for days with out sleep in there she would fall asleep and die very slowly. It was used to tell if someone was a hieratic.

A medieval torture device shaped like a human with spikes inside. You would place one inside it standing up and then close it and the spikes were positioned so as to purposely miss the vital organs and create a slower, more painful death.

torture devica used in midaevil times..
it was a man-sized box with spikes and/or nails driven through the top..
and the way it was used...
lock a person inside the box, and close the top if it.. (door)..
since the nails/ spiles were different lengths.. some penetrated the person's flesh, and some just came painfully close...

hahah... (i'd hate to be locked into one of these things)
