The Xbox live has Silver Xbox Live membership free yeah all u do is hook it up. The other one is Gold but that one does reqiure a fee but i think when u buy the 360 it gives u a month or 2 free of Gold. I dont know the difference between those two though.

Xbox Live silver is free. This only requires you to create an account. The downside is everything. No online games, no messages, and some downloads are blocked.
Xbox Live gold is $49.99/year, $7.99/one month, or $19.99/three months. Just buy the yearly subscription, because after a month, you'll be addicted. This allows you to play games online and do everything Live was meant to do.
You can pay directly online (credit card) or buy a prepaid card with an activation code.

Creating an account for the first time will give you a free one month Xbox Live gold trial.

You CANNOT play games online with silver.
