Many GM products from 99 -02 had ABS failures, its not something they will fix however.... I dunno why it will not shift out of first gear should not have to do with ABS...... You may want to try unpluging your engines computer and plugging it back in to reset.... Then go from there......

It maybe the vss (vehicle speed sensor) does your speedo work ? If it does not this is more than likely your problem. Check at the rear of the trans case to make sure the sensor is plugged in they like to come unplugged all by themselves. If not it off to the repair shop or try a new sensor yourself if you know what your doing around a car

a.b.s and not shifting is two problems, the abs is more than likely the wheel speed sensor, the trans, check the speed sensor, just make sure it is pluged in, if it is, its more than likely clutchs, or forward clutch hub. check your trans fluid, i beilve it has to be in park and engine warm, the dip stick will say, make sure it is full that will make it not shift, also make sure the fluid is`nt shiny if it is, time for a new trans. good luck.

I would be looking at the speed sensor first as probably the cause. Also the wires at speed sensor conn often break inside the insulation ,
