A compound is what is gotten by adding elements that will chemically bond (ie salt in water for a ionic bond,) a mixture is a solution with stuff floating around in other stuff (water and oil and garlic in salad dressing, you shake it, get a mixture you can pour on a salad, the you let it set, after a short while the oil in water separate, and chunks of spices might be floating on top, there weren't the chemical bonds to hold it all together.)
