you ovulate 14 days from the first day of your last menstural period if your periods are regular, and approx every 28 days. Some people can ovulate earlier or later and be irregular so if you are trying to conceive try it this way and if it doesnt work a Dr. can figure out how your body ovulates. Good luck!!!

You ovulate 10-18 days BEFORE your expected period. The phase between ovulation and menstruation is called the Luteal Phase and must be at least 10 days long to become pregnant. The luteal phase is generally the same length every month and that is why your ovulation is predicted according to this instead of from your last period. Common thought is that you ovulate 14 days before your expected period (which is consequently also 14 days since your last one if you have a 28 day cycle). This may be where the confusion lies. Most people don't have a perfect 28 day cycle and that is why you can't rely on dates alone to predict your fertile period.

My suggestion is for you to buy the book, "Taking Charge of your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. This book will help you become your own fertility expert by charting temps, checking cervical mucous, cervical height, cervical opening and softness etc. You will be able to determine with certainty when to expect ovulation and when done correctly can be used as a VERY effective means of birth control and/or conception.

The book isn't expensive and you will have to buy a basil body thermometer which is different than the kind you use when you are sick. They are about 10 bucks. If you want to find out without reading and learning about yourself and you have the money to spend, you can always buy a fertility monitor or ovulation predictor kit.

These methods are the only sure way to know when you are going to ovulate-not dates.

You ovulate after your period. To figure out when your ovulation is most likely to occur, use an ovulation calendar. BabyCenter has a free one.
