For some kids, just being on the team and participating in practice is enough, even if they don't play in the games. Being around the team, going on the road, sitting on the bench is exciting for them. Also, it's always good to have extra bodies for practice in case someone gets hurt. If some of the players that aren't as good are complaining about playing time in the games that can be bad, but someone who is a marginal player who is willing to accept a role as a practice player can be very valuable. Most times they will play extremely hard in practice, pushing the better players to execute in practice like they'll have to in games.
Any more than 15 and you start to clutter things and can't manage your players well enough

If you figure, each position has three players for it, that allows for the starter to get injured. and then the 2nd stringer will also have a backup. i think it is a bit unreasonable to have 15, maybe 12. But also at practices more players allows the coaches to run a real game with subs and a full scout team, more players means more motivation

Having covered HS BB foer 15 years, you need the extra players for when the holidays come and the coach needs someone to play because his starter has decided to leave town because mommy and daddy are heading to their winter home in Hawaii for the school break. Maybe at the bigger schools because the players without any street cred also need a chance to play since it is only school and not he pros.

yes because the players can easily get injured and the coach will have no replacements if there are only 12 players on a team.players also get tired easily and cant play.

If it were me, I say no more than 10 or 11. If players are conditoned like they are suppose to be there shouldnt be a problem with getting too tired.
