I think if it is a younger child the book should be Uncle Arthur Bedtime Stories,Huckleberry Finn or Sleepy Hollow. Teens,Black Beauty, Old Yellar would be a good one., there are too many.

My favorite was always the Dr. Seuss books. Out of all the Dr. Seuss books, 'One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish' was my favorite. Also 'Chicka Chicka Boom-Boom' is a good one for little ones, it teaches the alphabet.

Mr Brown Can Moo, Can You? Its fun, it encourages language play, teaches rhyming, is repetitive...all prereq.'s to early reading skills. (My 17 yr old just came upstairs, so I asked him what book he remembers from when he was young, he said the book he remembers best is "The Rainbow Goblins"..its old, but very intriguing and has also passed the test of time)
