Tammy ...I hear you , the political doorway must begin with a simple observation of your economic reality. (example) What is threshold for new members to a particular political party and how do they affect my financial reality? When viewed from an economic standpoint alone,...Anyone making less than $100.000 a year and votes Republican is POLITICALLY RETARDED.

I vote Democratic because I believe that while capitalism is an excellent system, it's okay to help starving children who can't afford health care, particularly when helping such folks actually benefits the nation as a whole.
I vote Democratic because while I accept that corporations do some great and necessary things, I know they are primarily out for themselves, and I want someone making sure they don't dump poison in my air or water in their search to make a quick buck.
And I vote Democratic because for the past 50 years, Democratic presidents have controlled spending better than Republicans (2.9% increase for Dems, 5.3% for Repubs), and only the Democrats seem to be able to both balance the budget and create a booming economy at the same time.
Of course, the list goes on.

I am a registered Democrat, but I'm really centrist in my views. I vote for whichever candidate I think will do a better job. Lately I've been voting for more Democrats because I don't like what the GOP has done with the stranglehold they have had on US politics. I don't like the massive debts they've run up. I don't like their stubbornness on Iraq. I don't like how they've given billions to oil companies and Halliburton and their other political buddies.
Eventually, the Democrats will get too complacent and I'll start voting for Republicans again, I guess.

Ultra-Conservative aka Reactionary..
I would rather vote independent than Republican, because Republicans are far too liberal in my book..and Democrats are even worse. But of course, political parties, in general, are increasingly becoming more and more corrupt. That's why I like to vote for the ultra-conservative not-so-corrupt independent parties.

I am a moderate with some conservative views and some liberal views. I can't stand any of those that are on the far left or far right.
I usually vote for those that I feel will represent me the best.

Why ask whether folks are liberal or conservative? Most people are middle of the road.
