Because the word abbreviation means to take a longer word and shorten it in a form that is easier to write and use. In the case of the word abbreviation, it is standing true to it's form of the reason why the need for abbreviating is important and useful....so we don't have to write such long words!

for the same reason that "lisp" is so darn difficult for someone with a lisp to say...English can be cruelly ironic at times.
