Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
There is alot of simple pixel math involved in general web design, for example if you have a 160pixel by 600 pixel banner how much paint do you need to buy to paint it read? Ok, not really, but if you need to find the middle or quarters, or eighths of it to line up images and test for banner ads.
On a higher level entering into flash programming or java, with animation and movement the math can get very complex to make things such as randomized images or variation in motion. You will run into issues such as integer division, rounding up or down with floor and ceiling, trigonometry to calculate distances on a diagonal and so on.
I have listed two articles on the golden ratio, it might interest you to know there is very simple proportions the human eye finds very pleasing, and those roll over to web design concepts too.

Absolutely not. On the contrary, the attractive sites, with clean lines, nice fonts and color coordination are more artistic than scientific. Now the programming aspects (i.e. database, dynamic content programming) require a developer, who is usually good in math.

No, but being good in the concepts will not hurt. It takes just as much code to make a crappy looking page as it does a good one. So it is prolly better to be creative & learn math then it is to be math oriented & learn how to be creative.
