I meet people all the time who don't know anything about Darfur, Isreali/Palistine conflict, Jack abramov, Loss of liberties in Russia, Muslim rebels in Somilia. Hezbolla. They think East Indians are arabs, They think china and asia are two words with the same meaning,

I've also met alot of people who are ignorant about history. They don't know who was on what side in world war 2. They don't know about the holocaust, McCarthyism, The cuban missile crisis, Even the great deppresion.

I doubt most christians here know about constantines relationship to the bible they read.

A lot of people here also think Evolution is some kind of hoax. As well as the big bang. Even global warming is denied by some people here.

To clarify I mean people in other developed countries. I don't mean people in etheopia or cambodia.

With regards to Constantine; I think it is debatable whether or not Constantine was a Christian. However it does not change that his time was long after Jesus had died. His influence caused many gospels to be excluded which many historians agree were important to the teachings of Jesus. I believe the King James bible is incomplete.
I wonder how many Christians are even aware of the way the canon of the Holy Bible was compiled by holy men hundreds of years after the time of Christ. Who were compelled by a Pagan/Christian Roman Emperor into a summit. With the intent of uniting the christians under the new roman catholic church. Had all of the important Gospels been included sexism would have been abandoned long before modern times.

Wow...to prove you right, now I must go research all that stuff. I don't know why in America we don't ever think outside our proverbial boxes. As a teen, of everything in the first 2 paragraphs you wrote, I've learned about the holocaust and the great depression in school. Nothing else, and no modern issues.

I agree with you to some extent. Americans can't see past the noses on their faces. We are self indulgent and care only about what the media says we should, commercialization, i-pods,cars,how hot I look. But I also believe that alot of what you ask are religious based and Americans over the past 30 years have been told not to talk about religion in the public form (schools) so who do you blame for that.
I would also be interested in what YOU think about Constantine's relationship to the bible. He was a typical politician. He was not a christian himself, he just saw a huge uprising and used it to his advantage. He still believed in his gods up until the day he died.

I travel all over the world, and I find that most Americans know nothing at all, and others, from other coutnries, are well informed.

Americans (and I am an American) have no interests outside of the next ballgame, the latest movies, the ''reality'' TV shows. I cannot understand how they have no interest at all, except in their little world.

I find it very hard to find people to have stimulating conversations with. Maybe it is because we are so isolated from the rest of the world--those living here have never had to fight a war on our land. have never had major conflicts in our governing body, and life has been fairly easy.

Also, I find world history, geography, and social studies are lacking in today's American schools. This is, to me, unforgivable.

No I don't think so. Every now and then we get tv shows here where comedians goes to the USA and ask people in the street questions. You know, things like where is the USA on this map of the world?, tough questions like that. It's always good for a laugh.

At least other countries may an excuse--poverty-lack of books, etc but we have no excuse. How did America grow so ignorant?
Reading many of the answers was an eye opener for me. Hopefully the idiots are not representative of the general population but simply very vocal idiots.

are they ignorant 'like' americans -- probably.
are they 'as ignorant' as americans --- definitely not.!!!!

i like the first answer about how unidukated we allz iz.
For instance, I once asked directory assistance for a telephone number in New Mexico, she said, (and I quote) 'Sir, this is U.S. directory assistance, we don't do Mexico'. When I stated (thinking misunderstanding) that the number I wanted was in 'New Mexico', she said, 'New Mexico, Old Mexico, who cares. This is the U.S.'
Who can top that for IGNORANCE, I'd love to hear more.

no offense meant but i think SOME americans think they're too white and smart and perfect to care about those things..

and maybe they think knowing those things may make them fat or cause wrinkles..

haha..

but there are a lot of smart americans out there too..

just avoid the intellectually-challenged ones..
