I have always found this time of year depressing. A lot of it stems from the crass commercialization, a quiet introspective holiday is my wish. I found out some years ago though that light deprivation has a lot to do with it. A full spectrum light placed so that some enters the eye can help a lot.

I think you're right. I also think that unless you're very young or very lucky you've had someone close pass away. Christmas is the time you miss them the most.

Well I always loved Christmas, then my baby boy died on Dec 20, 1987, so I hated it for a while. I slowly started to get back into it, have spent it alone and never really get anything I want, but I love giving and the spirit and everything about it commercial or not.

Now I have a 4yr old girl and am having the best Christmas ever. Of course I still miss my son, but I choose happiness now.

You can make it what you want. If you want to look at the negative that is your choice, but there is also so much kindness, generosity and excitement at Christmas, not to mention the smells, sights and sounds. I hope you find a way to have a Merry Christmas, I really do.

I agree with you on the commercialization. I've found that by giving to people who truly need it, the holidays mean more to me. In fact, I tell everyone who asks what to get me for Christmas to put extra money in the collection plate at church, give money to a total stranger, or best of all, simply "pay it forward".

I get depressed during the holidays but it helps me to see a doctor. I just have a harder time getting excited about the holidays these days since I've grown up.
