My husband set up traps to trap a bob cat. He wants to take our 5 month old with to check traps. If there is a cat caught in the trap, he will have to shoot it. Will the gun shots cause my baby to go deaf?

The solution is simple. Before he shoots, cover the baby's ears or get the baby away from the area. He does not need to take the baby with him to check the traps, that is ridiculous. Sharp sounds tend to cause the most hearing damage.

Besides, he will probably have to set the baby down when he aims to shoot. Suppose the other bobcat, the mate of the one caught in the trap, is hiding behind some brush and leaps out to bite off the baby's head while your husband's back is turned. This does not seem like a very intelligent thing to do to me. Tell him to leave the baby home.

We are born with a finite number of special hairs in our ears that vibrate and transmit the sound. Those hairs get weakened and die (without replacement) throughout our lives due to the sounds that we hear.
Loudness is one thing that will destroy the hairs faster, but even not so loud noise has an effect. Concussion, such as gunshot, will cause damage. The child won't loose his hearing, but it all adds up. Why take some of his alloted hearing ability away, even if the effects won't show until later in life?
Besides, what possible reason would there be to take a baby to shoot bobcats?

Yes. Back up a little, and read your question, without the details. Unless your husband is a controlling tyrant, you know the baby should not go for all the reasons listed ... why trap a bobcat in the 1st place, uh... they KILL. Baby deafness is the least of the worries you've given us all now.

If you are having a bob cat issue it may be best to not take the baby into the woods.. gun or no gun.

However, if for some reason he HAS to check the traps and you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT watch the baby.. he should be using those headphone/earmuff things. Most hunters have them for target practice, they should be adjustable.

Your husband has no business taking a 5 month old to check traps...(besides traps in the U.S. are against the law) as far as the gun shots, if they're close enough to the baby yes they will affect his hearing at least temporarlily...Check with a doctor.

Ask him not to take the baby with him...I'm sure he can check the traps when he's alone. The baby won't go deaf, but he'll get super scared. It's too loud and sharp for their little ears.

Are you honestly thinking of letting him take your 5 mth old , of cause it will make him go deaf not to mention scare the living day lights out of him and cause him permenant damge your baby should never be around guns especialy ones that are being used who in their right mind would want to take their child into that knid of environment and who would even consider it , Seriously you would have to be a idiot to let him take your son

why would he want to kill a bobcat? why would he want to take the baby? why would you reproduce with this guy? i suppose he will drink a few beers first too.
the child will be traumatized. babies are naturally fearfull of loud noises. their ears are far more delicate them ours. it may not go deaf completely right away but there would certainly be permanent damage. if you want to double check call children's services and confirm that they would consider this abuse.

why on earth would he want to take a 5 month old out for that. i can see if the child was at least 6 but not before that. its just foolish behavior on his part. and gunfire can be extremely loud. it wont cause deafness but it could injure his/her hearing. my advise is to not allow it.
