I assisted RA for 6 years at a doctorate rate. Without the RA
the nights would have been boring. The couples in the program
aided the R.A. leaders, counsels and dorm presidents, advisors,
and admins. For a scholarship it is a well connected integrable
of the admins team.

Im at a college in ON and I think that res differs from college to college and university to university....However....the pros and cons to being an RA at my college....
Pros:
* you get money (at my college you get 1/2 your room and board free, other colleges get paid cash weekly...etc)
* If people on your floor are being super loud and annoying you can do something about it!
Cons:
* At my school you still have to live in a apartment with 5 other people (we dont have shared rooms but you're still having to share your living space)
* Alot of people I know that live with an RA pretty much hate them because they can be control-freaks or abuse their privileges (i think its all in how you do your job)
* You have to stay a minimum number of weekends a semester, cant go home on reading week when the residence is absolutely dead and have to take shifts being on call during the night
I thought about doing the whole RA thing but I didn't like the limitations about going home as I have a car and like to go home when i please....but I think you should definately go for it if you think you'd be good at it...I have a friend who absolutely loves it!! Just do your research and know the duties, responsibilities and obligations that will be involved in the position!! Good luck!

Pro's: your room and board is paid for, you live by yourself and do not have to put up with a roommate, you get to know everyone on your floor because you are in control of them, you get paid for doing your job ($$ differs at different schools)
Con's: you have to stay in 72hrs so many weekends per semester and cannot leave the residence hall unless you call another R.A to tell them you are leaving the premesis, you are only duty one day a week and have to be in your room by 3am, you have to attend meetings, post flyers and deal with problems on your floor, close the building for breaks (cannot leave until everyone is out on your floor).
I was never an RA, but these are the requirements for someone that wants to be an RA at Eastern Illinois university, they may not apply everywhere. My RA is pretty cool, she is always baking cookies, hanging out with her bf, but always has time for her people on her floor. The reason I never did it, was because I was unsure if I could be responsible enough.
