I understand the method, but why is it "scientific"?

This type of notation is used not only in mathematics, but all forms of science. Since science and mathematics go hand in hand, it was decided to represent numbers in a neater and more standard way. Scientists and mathematicians utilized this and created it as their norm, calling it scientific notation.

It was invented around the time scientists were discovering all sorts of things about the universe (1961), and the numbers they were using were either very very small or very very big. So they decided to write them in a slightly nicer way..
