I would say the biggest single factor was the GOPs 'Contract with America.' In all my years of campaign-watching, the Contract is still the most detailed, simple, succinct campaign platform I've ever seen. If each party would put out such a list of goals every election, at least we would all have a good idea of what we are voting for.

The fact that not one Republican Congressman, Senator, or Governor lost re-election.
The fact that all open Senate races (the incumbent not running for re-election) were won by Republicans.
